FacultyShack

I am reading Deborah Meier's In Schools We Trust and am fascinated and encouraged by her ideas...especially her ideas on faculty evaluation & critique.

I am wondering...in other schools does the principal do classroom visits and evaluate each faculty member based on 1 or 2 visits?

What are some other schools out there doing to put the success of the school in the hands of the teachers?

Are schools putting teachers in charge of critiquing other teachers?
Are you in public, private, or parochial?
Elementary, Middle, or High School?

How does your school evaluate teachers annually?

In my middle school, the principal or v.p. evaluates us. The evaluation seems more to be fullfilling a "district requirement" than an actual attempt to observe and give you feedback on your teaching. In my schools, if you want feedback to improve your teaching, you have to set it up yourself. It would be tough to get a friend to give up their "prep period" to observe often enough to give you some helpful critique. I don't see how teachers are to improve with out coaching and observations. It's too difficult to evaluate ourselves besides using test scores and what we think is going on in our classroom. . . .
